Who Are Your US Open Favourites?

The tennis elite descended on New York last week for the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open. As the start of the final week gets underway at Flushing Meadows, let’s take a look back at some of last week’s highlights and all the action ahead as we move towards the business end of things.

Men’s Singles

The first week of the tournament saw exits from some of the top seeds including Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roberto Bautista Agut. The Big Three – Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer – continue to dominate the Men’s game, but Sunday saw defending champion, Djokovic, hang up his racket after a shoulder injury forced him to make a shock retirement from his match with Stan Wawrinka, handing the Swiss his place in the quarter-finals.

Djokovic’s exit from the tournament now makes Nadal hot favourite to win the title for the fourth time but also boosts Roger Federer’s chances of reaching his first US Open final since 2015. Will this upset also give younger hopefuls outside the Big Three, a golden opportunity? Daniil Medvedev, the fifth seeded Russian, has become the pantomime villain of the tournament but can he use the negative energy of the crowd to spur him on? He takes on Wawrinka in the quarter final on Tuesday.

Women’s Singles

In the Women’s game, we saw early exits from Maria Sharapova, who faced the might of Serena Williams but failed to make her mark with a 6-1 6-1 defeat. French Open champ, Ashleigh Barty, was knocked out by China’s Wang Qiang, and fourth seeded Simona Halep was sensationally knocked out by American outsider, Taylor Townsend, demonstrating the unpredictability at the top of the women’s game.

After the upset that overshadowed Naomi Osaka’s victory over Serena Williams in last year’s final, she will be hoping to defend her title and go for double Grand Slam glory after winning the Australian Open at the start of the season.
