Volatile Vikings: Exclusive Interview Part One
‘When we set out to do Volatile Vikings, we had a bit of a different plan. We kind of wanted to do something which is a known theme but at the same time not a fully known kind of narrative.’
That’s Callum Sultana, Game Producer at Relax Gaming, talking about their new release of Volatile Vikings, coming to Mr Green this September 21st. He told Mr Green’s Jill Bergforth, that their new game sets itself apart from other Norse themed entries because they wanted to combine the narrative theme with unique game mechanics.
Viking themed slot games are super popular and our players really like Viking themed slot games too, but tell me, what sets Volatile Vikings apart from other Viking themed slot games?
‘There’s so many Viking themed games out there. So many of them are doing the same thing, they tend to follow the same kind of narratives. When we set out to do Volatile Vikings, we had a bit of a different plan. We kind of wanted to do something which is a known theme but at the same time not a fully known kind of narrative. We have a very unique mechanic on the game as well, so we thought we were pretty well placed to do that. So that was kind of our decision making for that game.’
It’s also really cool how you almost added another dimension to the game by splitting the graphical vision of the base game and the bonus game. The base game is in the icy north and the bonus game is dominated by fire almost. So what is the inspiration for the overall design approach?
‘Yes, Good observation first of all. With every game we’re trying to treat the base game as the journey almost, especially nowadays with ‘Buy Features’ being so popular in certain markets and stuff like that. A lot of our players tend to focus specifically on the features. So narratively, we always want to tie the game together. So in this game, you’re kind of in calm seas approaching the big battle ground, if you will, for the Free Spins. Then, when you go into the Free Spins you obviously want to bring everything to life and you can get some really nice wins in the game. So obviously visually, you want that to be really impactful and at the same time to be visually rewarding when you do get those really big wins. So yeah, everything kind of went hand in hand with this game. That’s why you see what you see now basically.’
We love the design but also really love the soundtrack. I feel like it really complements all of the volatile action of the game. So how did you choose the soundtrack for the game?
‘Well, first of all, I am really really lucky to work with some amazing sound designers, so I have to give credit to them completely for this. I mean, there was some initial hints and tips which we wanted to do. For example, on the winning symbols, we knew we wanted to use this kind of choir sound, to make something a bit different again, from the usual Viking games. So in all fairness, it was really them who shaped the game and again, full credit to them. They are really really skilful people. Once they see the game, they can pretty much hear what fits it, so yes, full credit to them.’
