To celebrate the launch of our exclusive game release, we sat down with Mark Claxton – the Head of Games from iSoftbet to ask him everything you need to know about their adventure-packed title ‘Tyrant King MEGAWAYS’.
Can you tell us a little bit about how you came up with the concept for ‘Tyrant King Megaways’?
This series of games is a natural follow-on from our successful Twisted Tales series and take action-packed gameplay to the next level. Our “APEX predator” slots series offers high octane thrills to get the reels spinning and the heart pumping. We brainstormed all possible candidates in terms of which animal could take on such a task as being the debut Apex predator and we thought it was only right to start with one of the biggest and most fearsome of them all – the T. Rex! The T. Rex literally helped us achieve our goal to create a game with some serious bite and massive win potential. Adding Megaways to our unique iSoftBet gameplay, design and features was always a way to stir excitement with players, and this is no exception.
So, once you guys locked down the concept of the slot, what was the next step?
Once we agreed on the concept, it was really about setting the right scene and mood for the artwork. We wanted to have a good balance of ferociousness and warmth within the artwork, so the colour palette is very bright and vibrant which gives it that comic book feel. We wanted to also include a human touch, so we added two characters – our heroic explorer, Hugo, and the native dinosaur hunter, Hazel.
Sometimes themes can be dry without a human element and we felt that dinosaur slots in the past had suffered from that.
How did you decide on the graphical vision? We personally love the comic-inspired graphics on this slot! How many artists and designers worked on this project?
Graphical inspiration comes from all angles here at iSoftbet! Typically the game producer would start out with visual examples of the general look and feel for all aspects of the game and pass it over to the design team who would then take a deeper look and then provide a moodboard and options for the key graphical parts in the game. Characters are one element in a slot game that can be the most fun for the artist and also the Producer.
In Tyrant King we started off inspiration for our female character by sending links to pictures of Raquel Welch from the movie 1 Million Years B.C – a strong female lead in a land of dinosaurs. We wanted to move her character on to be slightly more badass – which is why she now carries the war paint! A graphical vision can evolve during the process sometimes depending on other external factors such as the game math – perhaps the math is a little on the “brutal” side and the game symbols may need to be made a little more serious looking so the player can relate the math and artwork.
Typically we have 2-3 artists working on a project, each with their own specialist discipline such as illustration or animation. Usually, we would not mix multiple illustrators onto one project because the tone of the artwork might diff and style may clash. At iSoftBet, we are lucky to have ‘the best of the best’ when it comes to artists – which is really noticeable in our recent releases.
You guys have already released a few MEGAWAYS mechanic-based slots, why did you decide to make another one?
Players still love Megaways, it’s as simple as that. There is a clear demand and, in our case, at iSoftbet, we have seen great success by combining our unique concepts and innovative gameplay with arguably the industry’s most popular mechanic. At iSoftbet we do not want to keep cloning the same model over and over – we are not afraid to try new things. It has worked wonders for us in the past with our Megaways games such as Aztec gold Extra Gold Megaways.

We love the ‘Wild Tyrant Respins’, tell us more about this roarsome feature
This is one of the most exciting features I have played in a slot for a long time – and I have spent my whole life playing slots! If you are lucky enough to land 4 wild symbols on the middle 4 reels, you trigger the Wild Tyrant Respins feature. You then enter a “Hold & Win” style feature where you have 3 respins to try to land as many additional wilds as possible, with each new wild that lands resetting the respin meter back to 3.
You want to trigger this respin feature when you have a large Megaways grid because when you have more spaces to land wilds, you naturally get a higher win potential! Once the 3 respins have been used, it will suspensefully reveal the rest of the symbols on the reel grid and big wins await.

Loving the puns! We wanted to include the thrills and spills of the Wild Tyrant respins feature and further enhance the excitement.
