Learn to Calculate Pot Odds and Poker Percentages ( + a Tip to Work Out Your Winning Odds)

Poker is without a doubt one of the most popular card games around. So, if you’re looking to play, it’s important know the ins and outs to give yourself the best possible chance of winning.

In this short blog, we take a look at Poker pot odds, how to calculate them and, ultimately, how to use them at the table.

What are Poker pot odds?

To put it simply, poker pot odds are the amount you stand to win for every £1 you stake, or the odds of winning the pot. They’re the ratio between the size of the pot and the size of the bet you’re facing, which can be extremely useful in helping you make an informed decision.

How to calculate pot odds

To get your pot odds just divide the amount you have to put in to make the call by the total size of the pot.

So, let’s look at an example. There’s £400 in the pot, and another player bets £200 on the turn, so the pot size is now £800. Your call will cost £200, so just divide £800 by £200, which gives you pot odds of 25%.

Pot odds on their own aren’t particularly useful. You’ll need to know the winning odds to truly get the most out of them, as you’ll need to compare the two.

In Texas Hold’em, the first step is to count the number of outs.

Here’s a little tip to help you figure out your winning odds. They are roughly four times your number of outs on the flop, and 2.2 times on the turn.

How to use odds to inform decision-making

Once you’ve figured out your pot odds and winning odds, it’s time to make your call. If your winning odds are bigger than your pot odds, it might be wise to make the call.

There are tons of Poker games to play at Mr Green, like Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Live Caribbean Stud Poker and many more. Are you ready to take your seat at the table?
